We support and advocate for councils across New Zealand, ensuring the needs and priorities of their communities and residents are heard loud and clear at the highest levels of central government.
We empower councils who know their communities best and support them to thrive – culturally, economically, socially and environmentally.
We’re led by a National Council of elected members in various capacities from across New Zealand and our focus is on being future-fit, proactive and inclusive in all that we do – from policy development, advocacy and story-telling, to supporting capability building through advice, consultancy and training.
We are primarily funded by membership fees. We also get Government funding to deliver programmes like The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) which creates thousands of jobs across the country and PacificTA. We also receive funding from agencies such as DIA, MFAT, MSD and Treasury to support councils to engage in policies and programmes that impact the sector and their communities.
The vast majority of Government funding LGNZ receives goes directly into local communities or to support councils with shared services such as legal and technical experts. The breakdown of funding received over the last seven years is below:
