We want more Kiwis and communities to be represented and vote.
Our vision is for Aotearoa to be the most active and inclusive local democracy in the world.
LGNZ and Taituarā’s joint VOTE 2022 campaign will be a national conversation about diversity and a place for everyone, supporting candidates as they stand and improving voter turn-out in local authority elections.
It’s all about representing the aspirations and needs of a range of communities and people having their say at the 2022 local elections on the issues that matter for them and their whanāu, communities and business as we look towards a resilient and innovative future.

How can you vote in the local elections?
Anyone who is correctly enrolled can vote in the local elections where they live.
Also, voters who own property within a local council area, but who usually live outside this, can apply to go on the ratepayer roll. They will then be able to vote in the area where they pay rates, and the area where they live.
To go on the ratepayer roll, you need to apply to the electoral officer for the local council area in which you own property but do not usually live. The electoral officer will send you out a form to complete, sign and return so they can check your eligibility.
If you are registered on the unpublished roll, you will need to apply to the electoral officer at your local council to receive your voting papers.
Overseas voters can take part, but must ensure that they are correctly enrolled with an overseas postal address in order to receive their voting papers. Voting papers for local elections cannot be downloaded.
Vote Day, 8 October
To make sure your vote counts, we urge people to post their papers well before Vote Day.
Our research has shown some of the main reasons people give for not voting are they forgot, ran out of time or were too busy.

Ngā Pōti ā-Taiohi - Youth Voting
We want more Kiwis to get involved in the 2022 Local Authority Elections and that includes our tamariki - our future voters!
The Ngā Pōti ā-Taiohi - Youth Voting initiative is for tamariki aged between 11-15 years old (school years 7 to 10). It replicates the local authority elections taking place in each area in their akomanga, classroom.
Youth voting gives tamariki a chance to try out the election process by discussing what’s important to them, voting for candidates on real issues, and comparing their results against the official election results. Youth voting is designed to align with the civics education theme in the existing school curriculum.
